Durante sua carreira como actor participou em numerosos filmes e programas de televisão. Charles apareceu na maioria dos filmes de Frank Capra, incluindo "Caballero sem espada", "Arsénico e encaixe antigo", e "Que belo é viver!".

Carreira
Lane trabalhou inicialmente como corredor de seguros dantes de começar sua carreira de actor no teatro de Pasadena.
O actor e director Irving Pichel foi o primeiro em sugerir-lhe que começasse a actuar em 1929, quatro anos mais tarde Lane foi membro fundador do Screen Actors Guild. Lane converteu-se em um favorito do director Frank Capra, quem lhe deu trabalho em vários filmes; em "Que belo é viver!", Lane fez o papel de um recolector de alugueres que trabalhava para o miserável Henry Potter (Lionel Barrymore), que tentava lhe explicar a seu empleador que muitos de seus inquilinos se estavam a ir, favorecidos pelos baixos custos das hipotecas oferecidas por George Bailey o protagonista do filme.
Entre os muitos papéis que desempenhou como actor de carácter, quiçá Lane seja mais recordado por sua representação de J. Homer Bedloe na comédia televisiva "Petticoat Junction". Bedloe era um director de caminho-de-ferro de espírito covarde que visitava o Hotel Sombrio em forma periódica, tentando encontrar uma justificativa para terminar o serviço de comboio de Hooterville, sem ter nunca sucesso. Também lho recorda por seus aparecimentos em "I Love Lucy", em particular o episódio "Lucy vai ao Hospital", na que se encontra na Sala de Espera com Ricky Enquanto Lucy dá a luz a seu filho. Lane também desempenhou o papel principal do episódio "O Director comercial".
Lane casou-se com Ruth Covell em 1931, eles permaneceram juntos até a morte de Ruth em 2002.
Em sua carreira profissional, Lane trabalhou em mais de 150 filmes e centos de programas de televisão.
Sua última actuação realizou-a à idade de 101 anos em 2006 no filme The Night Before Christmas. Sua última actuação para televisão foi em 1995 à idade de 90 anos, quando apareceu no filme de TV de Disney "O computador utilizava sapatilhas", que era uma nova versão de uma obra de 1970.
Em 2005, os Prêmios de TV Land renderam-lhe homenagem a Lane celebrando sua 100 aniversário. Em 2007 , Charles cumpriu 102 anos de idade. Em julho de 2007 , faleceu aos 102 anos.
