François Jacob nasceu em Nancy , França o 17 de junho 1920. Iniciou sua carreira de Medicina que teve que abandonar depois da invasão alemã na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Militou nas Forças Francesas Livres que comandava Charles de Gaulle. Para 1947, conhece e corteja a sua futura mulher, Lise.^[1]

Em 1950 pôde doctorarase em Medicina. É nomeado assistente no Instituto Pasteur. Em 1960 é eleito chefe do Serviço de Genética Microbiana do mesmo instituto.

Seus estudos de investigação versaram sobre a forma em que os genes transmitem a informação sobre a reprodução e o funcionamento celular.

Outorgou-se-lhe o Prêmio Nobel de Fisiología ou Medicina em 1965 , que compartilhou com André M. Lwoff e Jacques L. Monod
