Philip José Farmer (North Terre Haute, Indiana, 26 de janeiro de 1918 - Peoria, Illinois, 25 de fevereiro de 2009 ) foi um escritor estadounidense de ciência ficção e fantasía, autor de novelas e relatos breves.

A ciência ficção de Philip José Farmer

Em muitas das obras de Farmer aparecem personagens preexistentes, tomados da história ou da ficção. É o caso de The Other Log of Phileas Fogg (1973), que recheia as elipsis da conhecida novela A volta ao mundo em oitenta dias, de Julio Verne, ou da Barnstormer in Oz (1982), no que o filho adulto da protagonista do mago de Oz, Dorothy, chega ao país de Oz por um acidente do avião que estava a pilotar. Outras personagens que aparecem frequentemente em suas obras são os heróis pulp Tarzán e Doc Savage: na novela The Adventure of the Peerless Peer Tarzán forma equipa com Sherlock Holmes. Farmer é também o criador das séries de Lord Grandrith e Doc Caliban, personagens baseadas, respectivamente, em Tarzán e em Doc Savage. Esta série compõe-se da Feast Unknown (1969), Lord of the Trees (1970) e The Mad Goblin (1970). Farmer tem escrito ademais dois ingeniosas biografias de Tarzán e Doc Savage, Tarzan Alive (1972) e Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life (1973).

A série Mundo do Rio (Riverworld) conta as aventuras de personagens tão diferentes entre si como Richard Francis Burton, Hermann Göring e Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) em um estranho para além no qual todos os seres humanos que viveram no passado ressuscitam no vale de um rio que se estende por todo um planeta. Riverworld and Other Stories (1979) é uma colecção de relatos que se desenvolve no mesmo mundo imaginario; nela se inclui o conto que deu origem à saga. A série World of Tiers consta das novelas The Maker of Universes (1965), The Gates of Creation (1966), A Private Cosmos (1968), Behind the Walls of Terra (1970), The Lavalite World (1977) e More Than Fire (1993). Esta série, baseada na ideia de um universo paralelo, inspirou a Roger Zelazny sua série de Amber. Farmer escreveu Vénus on the Half-Shell (1975) com o seudónimo de Kilgore Trout, um escritor ficticio que aparece nas novelas de Kurt Vonnegut.

As obras de Farmer abordam com frequência o tema do sexo: seu recopilación de histórias breves Strange Relations, de 1960, marcou uma meta na história do sexo na literatura de ciência ficção. Também a religião está presente ao trabalho de Farmer: Jesús aparece como personagem em um dos relatos de Riverworld and Other Stories e na novela Jesus onMars .
