Robert F. Furchgott nasceu o 4 de junho de 1916 em Charleston , Carolina do Sur, Estados Unidos. Estudou Química na Universidade de Carolina do Norte em Chapel Hill. Em 1956 trabalha como professor de Farmacología na Universidade do Estado de Nova York e desde 1988 se dedica ao ensino no Departamento de Farmacología da Universidade de Miami.
Suas investigações, pela cuales obtém o Prêmio Nobel de Fisiología ou Medicina em 1998 , centraram-se na análise dos efeitos de diferentes drogas sobre a musculatura vascular, chegando à conclusão de que os copos sanguíneos se dilatan só se o endotelio vascular produzia um sinal desconhecido que faz que as células musculares vasculares se relaxem. A esta substância que denominou EDRF (factor de relajación derivado do endotelio), dirigiu suas investigações de dito factor.
Compartilhou o Prêmio Nobel com Ferid Murad e Louis J. Ignarro.
